Welcome
At the time of writing the sun is out, there
is an aroma of freshly cut grass wafting in through the window, England have
won a Test series abroad and it’s still light at 7pm. This can only mean one
thing….. welcome to the 2008 cricket season! We look forward to seeing lots
of young players (new faces and old) and parents down at the ‘Bob Carter
Ground’ (same ground, new name). Meanwhile, feel free to contact your Youth
Development Officer, Tim Ovenden, at
timovenden@hotmail.com if you have any queries.
Practice
As you can see from the dates we are going
to run three youth sides in leagues again this year. In addition we will continue
to work with the younger players and will hope to arrange some friendly
fixtures for them if their skill levels develop appropriately.
Most of the league fixtures start at 6.00pm
and if we are playing away it may mean that the children are not back until
between 9.30 and 10.00pm. Please arrive
at all league fixtures 15 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Please contact any of the coaches if you
have ideas that will help our club. We would particularly welcome anyone who
would like to help coach, fund raise or provide sponsorship.
Please note that parents of Under 9's
should remain at the ground with their children for the duration of the
practice.
Coaches for the 2008 season
We are fortunate to have a team of
dedicated volunteers who will lead each of the age groups for us this
season. All of our coaches would welcome support from parents, so if you
would like to get involved (enthusiasm the only prerequisite), please talk
to one of the relevant coaches (please be aware that any adult who works
with our young players must be fully CRB checked).
Please note that both boys and girls are
welcome in all age groups, and in addition Hugh Shackell will continue to
run the North Dorset Girls Squad which will be based at Buckhorn. Hugh can
be contacted on 01258 860 147.

Buckhorn Weston Youth Cricket
Club Annual Membership Fee…
This year the membership fees have been set
at the following rates. Under 11, 13 and 15s will pay £15 for the season
and under 9s £10. Match fees will be £1 per child per match.
No player will play in a league
or friendly match until membership has been paid and until a parental
consent form has been completed
Parental Involvement
As much as all the coaches enjoy the time
that we spend involved with BWCC Youth Cricket we can not make a success of
what we are trying to do without your help.
Please ensure that your son / daughter
comes to cricket with the right attitude. That is with a desire to learn
and a desire to play. If they do not want to come to cricket do not force
them, this is particularly important with the younger children.
If it becomes clear that a child does not
wish to attend cricket or is not approaching the coaching with the right
attitude then it may be necessary for us to ask that they do not attend.
We would also welcome parental help on
Friday nights. You will not be required to organize any coaching but it
will allow the coaches to be much more flexible in what we can offer if we
have some additional help.
If you would like to do some umpiring then
please also let the coach of your child’s team know. There are always a
couple of fixtures a season which a coach may not be able to attend. We are
always looking for people to accompany a team on these occasions. You would
not need to pick the team or coach them but just help umpire the game and
ensure that all the children get home safely after the match.
Even on the majority of occasions when the
coach is with the team someone else to do the umpiring would be very welcome
as it allows the coach to give more attention to helping the children
improve their game.
If you are able to get involved please
speak to one of the coaches.

Equipment
It is not necessary for your son / daughter
to have all the cricket kit to start attending the coaching sessions as BWCC
will supply all the basic needs.
Under 11 players and above will be playing
hard ball cricket so it is necessary for the children to have a protective
box. It may be possible to borrow one on Friday evenings but this is not
something we wish to encourage and certainly for games all Under 11s and
above MUST have their own box. Those selected to play in the league
fixtures should also have a set of whites
Diary Date
The BWCC Annual Ball will take
place this year on Saturday 5th July in a marquee on the Bob Carter Ground.
Last year saw a tremendous turn out from the parents of our Youth Section
and we hope that many of you will come back for more! Don’t forget to put
the date in your diary and book baby sitters early as tickets sold out
quickly last year!
OTHER INFORMATION
Hard Ball - on the registration form there is
a section to give permission to play hard ball cricket. In the interests of
safety we have to request that every boy has his own box. The club will
provide batting gloves, pads and helmets in accordance with the rules of the
England and Wales Cricket Board.
Weather - please use your common sense. If
the ground is wet or slippery practices will almost certainly be called off.
On match days please contact your team manager to confirm if the game is
still on.
Behaviour - it is important that all players
respect not only their team mates and opponents, but also the coaches. This
is especially important with the Under 15’s as their actions and attitudes
are without doubt mirrored by the younger players.
Problems - the aim of the club is to provide
fair play, improve skills and encourage support from all family members,
however if you have a problem with the youth section please contact Kevin
Pike, or Tim Ovenden who is the Buckhorn Weston Cricket Club Youth Liaison
Officer. Equally if the club have a problem with either a child or a parent
through abusive or unreasonable behaviour the club reserves the right to
withdraw the player’s membership.
Shirts - if Mums and Dads are being nagged
into buying cricket kit, especially shirts, please remember that we have
club kit and we can supply shirts, trousers, sweaters, caps etc
with the club logo at a reasonable cost. Please contact
Alex Gibbs if
interested.
Click on youth fixtures
or youth calendar for the youth league
fixtures and please support these teams if you can.
Please enjoy and take a pride in playing for
Buckhorn Weston Youth Cricket Club.
